Screw the iPhone and Apple….Palm Pre is HERE!!!
Since the iphone debuted almost 2 years ago, I assumed a cell phone competitor like samsung, sony, blackberry, nokia, LG, anybody would come out some with something even better or at the very least comparable. Instead they’ve all proven how superior the iPhone is. As much as I hate apple, I can’t deny the ipod touch and the iphone. Its an incredible piece of engineering.
But if you’ve given up on cutting edge cell phone technology, fear not. The smart phone pioneer company might just make things interesting. If you haven’t heard of the Pre yet. Let me be the first one to tell you….
The Palm Pre features a 3.1-inch 24-bit color touch screen display. It integrates a proximity sensor that disables the screen when users put the phone up to their ear. To prolong battery life, a light sensor dims the display if the ambient light is dark. An accelerometer automatically orients webpages and photos for landscape or portrait view. Hidden from view, a full QWERTY keyboard slides out for easy and quick text messaging. An integrated 3.0-megapixel camera with LED flash and extended depth of field captures images and video. Other features include EV-DO Rev. A for high-speed Internet, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, GPS, Stereo Bluetooth and 8GB of flash storage. The Pre also has a micro-USB plug, 3.5mm headphone jack and a new wireless charger. The Pre runs on Palm’s new webOS. Multiple applications can be opened and run simultaneously, so users can flip from one program to another. The new platform introduces Palm Synergy, a feature that brings information from the many places to the Pre in one integrated view. It also groups conversations with the same person in a chat-style view, even if it started in IM and replied with text messaging.
The words I type do not do this phone any justice. Please go to YouTube and do a search on the palm pre. The first time I saw video demo of the Pre in action my jaw dropped. I personally have the blackberry 8330 and I can honestly say its a great phone. The lack of touch screen is somewhat disappointing, and the fact I have to subscribe to Blackberry Internet Service is a turn off, but at least I’m not forced into a disgustingly over priced long term contract with AT&T in order to use the iPhone. Since I am in North America and my cell phone provider is CDMA, I am very limited to cell phone choice unlike many of you abroad. Which is another reason why I’m even more excited for the pre. And don’t despair if you’re using GSM technology. The pre will also come in GSM down the road hopefully.

I was discussing it with my friends the other day. Looks like an incredible phone. Any idea how are they going to price this one?
The pricing should be similar to the iPhone in India. But I am expecting it to be cheaper as Palm has been in India for some time now. Apple was just trying to chooso the consumer. But you cant expect the $199=INRxxx to apply here.
Also, I know that this topic of “iPhone Tech” has been beaten to a pulp but still “the most tech savvy cell phone users dont like the iphone”.
Also Here
iphone is still iphone..everything else will be a cheap imitation..hahahahah
imitation - maybe. cheap - i hope.
I am absolutely in love with the Palm Pre.
That said, I don’t think Apple was trying to milk the consumer in India. It is our telecom companies and the tax laws which are trying to do that. If AT&T can subsidize the iPhone, why couldn’t Airtel ?
Yes, the fact remains that Apple products are priced above comparable products in the market but then that’s how it is. And the users who buy them do see a value in it. Abhilash: You really should try using a Mac for once .. and really use it not just play with one in an Apple store. And btw, don’t you still use a Windows Mobile based phone ? hmm .. I rest my case
I’m not an Apple fanboy. I’m a predominantly a Linux user but have owned a couple of Apple products including the iPhone and can see the value in paying a premium price for those products. I don’t love the iPhone as much as I used to since I saw the Pre demo, but the fact is, the iPhone provides the best mobile web experience today. No other smartphone in the market right now, with the exception of the G1 (and it actually looks like a brick), has a better browser. The integration with mobile me is also pretty good.
The Pre is vapour ware right now and who knows how it’ll perform when it is released.
Oh btw, did anyone see the iPhone 3.0 firmware announcement yesterday.
The smartphone battle has truly begun !
shekhar this may look nice but the iphone is an iphone no matter what, You willing to sell yours ?
@wanderer: I have never been more excited about a phone before in my life. I love what Pre brings on table. As far as my iphone is concerned, I gave it to my sister a couple of months ago. To be honest, as Sharninder points out above, I loved the iphone experience of browsing too… internet to photo’s to music files to address book.. it was a charm. And I miss that. But here are top few things where iphone kinda sucked for me, and these are basic things:
1)At places where network is limited, the nokia’s were running just fine but iphone was a dead duck.
2)I am a speaker guy. I’d like to attend calls with speaker on as often as i can. The max volume of iphone speaker is shady to put it politely.
3)The whole co-ordination with iTunes, painful.
@Sherry: yeah, i saw the 3.0 announcement. Apple added some good stuff. I know a lot of people howling about cut, copy and paste will be happy
i didnt read any of the stuff.i love my i-phone
I’m going to miss not buying this one. Dan, I hope you get one though for me to play with it. The who CDMA sprint thing sux.
