Quantum of Solace

I must say this out loud that I am not big on bond flicks. And the mere fact that I just referenced a piece of cinema as ‘flick’, would suggest that I don’t really rate it either. Maybe I can’t quite comprehend a superhero without any spiderbites or flying suits, or maybe it is just the retarded old lady heading MI6 that I can’t stand, or maybe I happen to have bad taste in cinema. In any case when it comes to Bond, I am not quite impressed.

Quantum of Solace is destruction of all good work done by its predecessor. Casino Royale rebooted the bond series, a brand new bond with fresh legs, lots of style on the gambling table and beyond, a worthy lady, a strong story, and tons of emotion with heartbreak and death. QoS has a story line of a B grade action flick that the producer could never complete because he fell a 100 dollar short. I would imagine that the person responsible for finally selecting a script worthy of Bond is a rat from Russian Intelligence with a sole purpose to destroy the British MI6… I am serious. Moving on, a good screenplay and decent editing can still get around even the worst of stories. But QoS looses all points in both these technicalities too. The screenplay is confusing, the bond is on the move from Austria to London to Moscow to Italy to tons of other places without adding up to any sort of story. The editing is fierce, too much chop and cut, without even attempting to build any character in the movie. In between all the travel and chasing scenes, the plot is completely lost. Bond movies are supposed to make up for everything they lack by tons of style, a super hot lady, and by ‘my name is bond, james bond’. QoS had nothing.

It is a mediocre, super-serious cinema strongly based on personal revenge and angst. I can’t really fault Daniel Craig, he needed something to play with. He was sulking all the way, supposedly still not over the heart crash. But who knows, maybe he was sulking being the 007 agent on this forgettable project. It was more like ‘Bland, James Bland’.

Though, I have not seen the movie, but I liked your comment - “Bland, James Bland”. After having read your comments, the probability of watching it in cinema hall is 0. Why spend 150 INR for a movie that ran short of 100 USD ;-(

    I actually liked the movie

This one does not have the regular bond gadgets we are used to and one needs to remember the previous movie to get to know what’s going on in this one so in that regard a bad movie

@Mahendra: Good call. You can trust my movie reviews always :)

@Ankush: This one had nothing except a good opra in Austria.

I never really though Daniel Craig was a good fit for James bond.. he has the brawn… but isn’t sauve enough to carry the role.
This movie is all about action and the camera work can really give one a real headache, with the jumpy pictures and the crazy angles. Even the much talked about witty war of words with ‘M’ are quite passé.

    Resection has hit 007.
QoS is a low budget BOND flick - No gadgets …No Cool Car (the one he has gets destroyed, what a waste) … No Girls too.

The Bourne Ultimatum as Bond would have been better :)

I demand Pierce Brosnan to come back…or even Matt Damon will do !!

It is about time they outsource it to India. Akshay Kumar / Sanjay Dutt ..take your pick!

I thought the new bond was ok. The chase scenes were mint, they covered all possible chase terrain, road, air, and water…that was pretty cool. Storyline was weak. Not a big 007 fan myself but I do consider myself a big action fan. This was worth a rental, not a blockbuster.

Ha.. as long as we;re demanding old people to come back… I demand sean Connery!!

I think Christian Blae would make a good bond albeit a little short…

My take on all choices suggested so far:

Pierce Brosnan - After loosing his job at MI6, he has been hired by US and send to Iraq to find WMD. We all know that will keep him busy in the years to come.

Matt Damon - Suffering from identity crisis after a back to back series of the Bourne Identity. Also, he now plays in the big league of Martin Scorsese, I doubt bond will ever interest him.

Sean Connery - Too old. MI6 lady and Sean will look more like husband and wife. It will be a disaster.

Christian Bale - This man is a rock star. He is no british agent, he is a superhero and a magician. The bond franchise needs him, he does not need them. But I would like to see him play bond, it will be guaranteed entertainment.
