Password Frenzy

We all use passwords, and recently over a casual conversation with a friend I realized that my life will be over if I wake up one day to a password amnesia. Postmen gave way to emails, the instant telephone fixed line calls gave way to instant chit chats on messengers, walking into a bank transpired into strolling into the ATM’s, and key locks were replaced by punch in digital machines. While this led a way to the modern world we live in, it launched one curse…password.

Honestly, I’ve had too much of them lately. And its more to do with some happenings at work. You log in to the LAN with a password and then to the work email. Fair enough. After that there is a password for the internal chat application, a password to the attendance page, then a password to time recording application, a password to associate resource website, to the new payroll website, to the citrix server, to the mainframe application, to the front end of a basic application, to access network tools, and then one to password express in case you need to reset a password. It does not end there, you need a password for maestro: a basic application for tracking work and reporting. Oh! And I almost forgot, “Welcome to the conference calling center, please enter your pass code followed by the # sign. If you are the leader, please enter your leader pass code”.

The real fun occurs every 4 weeks when you are forced to change LAN passwords. The thing has become really annoying now, you cannot of course use any previously used password, the password should be alpha numeric, and at least one alpha must be a big boy (capital….grrr!). What’s next? ‘Your password does not meet the global standards listed in section 23b(iv)’. Phew!

Its not just limited to the Internet, mind it! The old fashioned key locks are gone. The suitcases have combinations and I have seen a women howling at an airport because she forgot her combination and the security was bashing the lock. Some phones have security locks when you switch them on. Few companies need you to punch in a password for on demand movies on TV, and the parental lock on TV that some parents use is a password too. How long before your car keys are gone?

Well, you never know when password amnesia will strike. I wonder how many passwords can one man have, before they are forever banned? The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind :).

Ah well, I really do hope biometric security comes around soon. Would be fun to get your eyes scanned and entering a building like those science fiction movies … oh wait .. then women will start complaining when they change their contact lenses ;)

hehe. well its true. biometric will be easy on my head. eye scan to enter office building and finger print scan to access your atm. but what about internet? I’m most looking forward to the day when everytime they ask me for a password, i can show them my finger ;). If you know what I mean. ha ha !

as long as they keep biometrics to fingers..lol..if you know what i mean..haha

haha. I know exactly what you mean. Don’t discount anything, they do all sorts of crazy things at biometrics. There is already a odor technology, how far can the source be? If you know what i mean.. haha!

OMG! I totally agree!! I cannot even recount how many times I’ve had to call for tech help/phone/online help because I can’t remember what passwords I have used where.
Till the time iris/biometric type stuff gets here, I have to depend on Abhi to remember them for me…He can make and remember passwords like w3%g7#2d!!!

    Hey,

    True!! but what next…

So something similar happened when i had to amend one of my word docs which i had locked. I rang a fire alarm to my brother and he managed to find out about unlokcing word docs. So here it goes

How to unprotect password protected word documents

    Go to - ‘Tools’
    Go to - ‘Macros’
click on - ‘Microsoft script editor’
hit cntrl F and find for ‘Password’
delete the letter cum number code (put as XXXXX in the illustration) ‘Password>XXXXX<
save the changes and just go ahead and unprotect the document

    !!! :)

So i guess there is no cure to our aging memories but i guess we would need to rely on computer genius like you to save us from such emergencies :)

  • Shekhar said:

yeah, i remember such laptops exist. but i hate that saif ad. you’ve just given me a new thing to blog about.. ads! watch out ;)

Abhilash, what a day that would be. but currently I am strugling to know where my things are, let alone those things knowing where I am.

  • Shekhar said:

@Manavi: phew, i’ve never ever locked a word doc. If I ever do and loose the password, i swear I will delete it :). Infact if i password protect a word doc, id like to delete myself only. Computer genius..umm…ummm.. a lot of people from my college would read this and burst out ;)

@Anu: the kind of password abhilash sets should be banned. In fact he should be banned for even remembering them ;).

Haha….I hope that day never comes! Makes me think we’re so dependent on our brains. Imagine the Ghajini type memory loss!

PS - Very interestign website layout :)
